WARNING: CHECK CASHING SCAM ALERT
We've been alerted that a common check cashing scam has recently resurfaced. The
"scammer" approaches with a story of being unable to cash a check or money order that
they've been given (they are from out of town/country, they are a college student and don't
have a local bank account yet, etc.) and asks you to cash it for them. The check looks
legitimate and usually the scammer will even offer to pay you a fee in return.
A good deed AND easy money, right? WRONG! Because you give the scammer the cash. The
scammer disappears and a day or two later the fraudulent check you deposited into your
account is returned unpaid and the funds are withdrawn from your account.
Think about it – why would a stranger give you a check knowing you could simply deposit it and
never give them the money? Especially when there are check cashing services readily
available! Because all the scammer really stands to lose is a slip of worthless paper. By
cashing the fraudulent check for them you have transferred the liability to yourself.
