Tropical Cyclone 05B (Lehar) continues to move westward across the Bay of Bengal and will make landfall in India later this week.
Lehar has continued to strengthen over the past 24 hours and is now the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane.
The combination of warm ocean waters and favorable atmospheric conditions will allow Lehar to continue to strengthen over the next day or two.

The current track shows Lehar likely to make landfall Thursday, local time, between Nellore to the south and Visakhapatnam to the north. Wind gusts of over 160 kph (100 mph) along with flooding rainfall and coastal flooding are all possible near where Lehar makes landfall.

This same area received rain from powerful Tropical Cyclone Phailin earlier this year and more recently from Tropical Cyclone Helen, so any heavy rainfall could lead to widespread flooding.

Tropical cyclones can form year round in the Indian Ocean; however, the most active periods for development in the bay of Bengal are April and May then again in October and November.
