Cricket - New Zealand star Jesse Ryder fights for life after late-night attack
New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder is in a critical condition after suffering serious head injuries in an attack outside a bar in Christchurch.
A Christchurch Hospital spokesperson told local media that Ryder was in intensive care with a fractured skull.
APNZ reports that four men attacked Ryder, hitting him from behind as he left Aikman's bar in the Merivale district at 00:30 local time. The fight started in the bar's courtyard before spilling onto the street and into a McDonald's car park.
Police said in a statement: "Police can confirm the incident did involve Jesse Ryder and that he is currently in Christchurch Hospital."
New Zealand Cricket's official Twitter feed said: "The whole NZC team's thoughts are with DijaRyder this morning," while Black Caps batsman Ross Taylor wrote: "Thinking of you mate."
Former England captain Michael Vaughan added: "Devastating news regarding Jesse Ryder... Just hope he can pull through... Thoughts are with him and his family..."
The 28-year-old, who was not involved in New Zealand's Test series against England, is a one-day specialist who was due to play in next month's Indian Premier League for the Delhi Daredevils.
Ryder's big-hitting style has made him a popular figure in the game. He has played 18 Tests, averaging over 40, plus 39 one-day and 20 Twenty20 internationals.
However, his career has been plagued by a series of off-field incidents.
In 2008, Ryder cut his hand trying to break into a toilet at a Christchurch bar at 5.30am, while the following year he missed team training after a night out.
Ryder admitted serious misconduct after a drunken incident in 2010, and last year New Zealand dropped him after a confrontation at a bar in Napier.
He has not played for his country since February 2012, as he withdrew from the side in an attempt to deal with personal issues.
