Notwithstanding the call given by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and Telangana Joint Action Committee to the people of Telangana to wipe out the Telugu Desam Party from the region, the ground realities are said to be different.
Inquiries in different parts of the Telangana districts have revealed that the TDP is likely to fare better than expected in the next elections, as the people are vexed with the Congress party. The position of the TRS, too, is not better because of its miserable failure to get an assurance from the Centre on the Telangana. The theory that TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao had mortgaged the Telangana interests is gradually graining ground in the region. So, the people are said to be feeling that in the given circumstances, Naidu can provide a better leadership than any other party leader.
The kind of response Naidu has got in Mahbubnagar district has enthused the party cadres. The party hopes to retain its present tally of 38 assembly seats, if not more, they say.
However, there is every chance that YSR Congress party, too, is all set to pick up. So far, the party has not been able to make any inroads in the region, but in the recent past, many of the Congress leaders who have realised that they have no future are shifting their loyalty towards the YSR Congress. There is likely to be a big turnaround for the party if Sharmila enters the region with her padayatra, say analysts.
