Very good advice mama and I can confirm that this is correct.

Especially summer kabatti people will be travelling outside their state of residence. Xerox copies kuda paniki ravu , they are not accepted.

I wanted to share an experience I had with you that should serve as a caution to all those who deem the rule to carry your green cards upon you at all times as not serious. Yesterday, I was traveling on my way back from Canada through I-87 in upstate NY where the US Border Patrol had set up a random checkpoint about 40 miles after we had crossed the border in the Lake George, NY vicinity.

My wife, I and my sister-in-law who was visiting us from Australia on a visa waiver were stopped while driving and asked about our nationality. Upon answering, we were told to produce immigration documents; failure to produce these is a misdemeanor carrying a $100 fine and/or 30 days in prison - Not to mention quite a bit of anguish. Luckily, we had all our docs since we had just driven in from Canada.

At the checkpoint, there was a car full of Indian guys on a road trip to Lake George who were all on H-1B. They were all detained since they did not have their passports, I-94 and I-797 on them. I asked the border patrol guard and this is what he said:

1. By law, all aliens in America above the age of 18 are required to carry their immigration documents on them at all times when outside their state of residence.
2. Not agreeing to produce such documentation is sufficient probable cause for detaining them until the immigration documentation can be verified.
3. Fourth (Unreasonable searches) and Fifth (Right to remain silent) amendment rights apply only to US citizens, Legal Permanent Residents and holders of certain long term visas such as H-1B. People on visitors visas do not have these rights and must be in possession of their immigration documents at all times.

A quick call to NY ACLU confirmed all of the above. Keep this in mind to avoid pointless bother if you are traveling within 100 miles of the Canadian or Mexican border.

A quick google search seems to suggest that this is a regular happening, BTW.
