Yet given the immensity of the global crisis, this is actually a pretty good result for Australia. Our 0.5 per cent December quarter crunch is less than that in Japan (down 3.3 per cent), the US (down 1.6 per cent) and Britain (down 1.5 per cent).

Australia is doing better for several reasons. First, our banks did not get burnt by the sub-prime crisis and continue to hold up well in comparison with US and European banks.

Second, we retained some momentum from the China boom, which business capital spending holding up in the December quarter.

Third, both budget and interest rate policy appear to be in better shape, and are likely to actually work better, than in other countries.

And fourth, the floating exchange rate has delivered a big competitive boost from the lower Australian dollar.
