401k to traditional ira no penalty. 401k to Roth ira, you'll have to pay taxes

Also you cannot transfer 401k with current employer to an ira. You can transfer 401k opened with old employers

Alternatively, for 2017 tax year, if your agi is less than 186000 for joint filing, you can contribute 5500 to Roth ira per person

Ex: joint income 200k, 15k 401k contribution

Agi in this case will be 185k, you can put 5500 to Roth ira from post tax money. No taxes, but no tax benefit either
