they could have profitable if musk was bit cunning like kia or hyundai. Also if he had focused alone on tesla rather putting hands on spaceX, boring company, solarcity, hyperloop etc. he could have made Model-X success. but seems he does't listen to investors or finance dept. Now atleast he seems taking tesla in right direction with Model-3 with atleast guarantees to 200k deliveries.
