While total U.S. employment grew by 4% between 2013 and 2015, employment in the city increased by just 0.4% over the same period -- less than over 500 of the 551 cities considered. Another unfavourable feature is Chattanooga’s high crime. There were nearly 1,000 violent crimes and about 5,900 property crimes in the city per 100,000 residents in 2015, well above the national rates of 373 violent crimes and 2,487 property crimes per 100,000 people.
