I am guessing it's compressor station. Any pipeline (gas or oil) will have intermittent compressor (gas) or pump (oil) stations to maintain the pressure. Nothing to worry, actual compressors will be in an enclosed building and you won't even hear anything given the distance of 1.2 miles. I don't think it's a factor for you. Ignorance is bliss
