The below is from his wife, Marie,Facebook page. Many of you have already heard either in the news or from someone in the cycling community but I'm trying to reach everyone I know. FB is the best way I know how. On Tuesday May 23rd, the day after our 13th wedding anniversary, my sweet husband Mark was in a near fatal bike crash while riding in Victoria. While cornering on a popular cycling route, he lost control and slid under an oncoming vehicle. Speed or control of the vehicle was Not a factor based on eyewitness of his teammates and the police investigation. He was immediately taken to the hospital in critical condition. By the time I arrived a few hours later from Calgary...he was in a coma. That was two days ago and it feels like years. He is currently in the ICU in a coma but shows small signs of improvement every day. He has a massive brain trauma and yes of course, he was wearing his helmet. His list of broken bones is extensive but relatively minor. Facial bones, jaw, collar bone, shoulder blade, ribs, ankle and knee. But the big one is his head. His immediate family is here and around him constantly. For those of you who have offered your help, thoughts and kind words.... my deepest and most humble thank you. I may not get back right away but knowing you care matters more than you might realize. Especially in those early morning hours in the dark, listening to monitors beeping and lights flashing, while starring at a face that you want desperately to wake up. I will continue to update Marks progress on this post if you'd like to check in. I have no idea if/when we can be home so please be patient if I'm absent or unable to respond right away. We are waiting. It's all we can do right now. Wait for Mark to wake up. If you know someone who isn't on FB who should know please copy and paste in an email. On a parting note, I'll say here what I told his cycling mates. Next to his family and friends, Mark loves cycling. The freedom, adventure and challenge. All of it. Please do what you love for your own soul's freedom and for those who can't (or can't right now) and smile for him. I know that's what he wants for you.
Ignorance is bliss
