Amazon is grabbing share from Macy's

In 1Q16, Amazon Apparel purchasers were up ~19% y/y, while Apparel purchasers fell ~1% y/y and ~5% y/y at Wal-Mart and Target, respectively. The longer- term trend also reflects a share shift in Apparel purchasers, with AMZN Apparel purchaser growth of 28% each quarter (on avg.) since ’14, while Apparel purchasers fell 4% and 3% at WMT and TGT. In 1Q16 AMZN had 15% more Apparel purchasers than WMT (vs. 24% fewer in 1Q14) and 37% more Apparel purchasers than TGT (vs. 4% more in 1Q14). For more information on AMZN trends (Prime, 30+ verticals, etc.) see our Mar. ’16 Cowen Internet Retail Tracker.

“While we do not track apparel purchasers for Macy’s directly, we have seen a continued shift away from traditional retailers, including Wal-Mart and Target, which we do track,” Cowen wrote. In the first quarter of 2016, Amazon apparel purchasing was up 19% year over year, while it fell 1% at Wal-Mart and 5% at Target Corp. TGT, -0.65% according to a survey of 2,500 consumers that the investment bank conducted.
