In my college days in Varanasi it was raining heavily outside and our mess was off. Me and my friends ordered food from a nearby restaurant. A very young boy brought the food. He was shabbily dressed signifying his poor financial condition. He was just a child and so I couldn't restrain myself from asking about him. Me : hey what's your age? He: 14 years Me: how much do you earn? He: Rs. 1500 / month Me: And what about food and your clothes? He: the owner provides little food and clothes when they are torn off. Me: do you study also? He: No, I don't have time to study. My parents live in Bihar, they have send me here to work. They want me to work and not study. Me: what do you do then of the money you earn? He: I have a younger brother of 7 years at home. I fund his education. If I don't, my parents will force him also to work and he too will remain uneducated. (he kept on getting emotional and was not able to speak properly) Me: If you want to learn, you can come to me, I will teach you if you want. He (with tears in his eyes): No, my owner wouldn't permit me, he engages me with work always.. he was highly emotional, wasn't able to talk and left very fast after that. Me and my friends stood helpless without uttering a word and just watched him run away. This incident is still afresh in my mind. It has transformed me as a person. I realized the sacrifice he's making at such a younger age and we have become so selfish in our life. We can find two brothers fighting each other always. Also, earlier I never thought of the society,but today I really want to contribute to our nation and be the helping hand in bringing smile on such faces. |
