Most oil and gas leases have a produce or lose clause, that is, if you don't produce oil or gas the lease terminates. Producers won't stop production if they think the market will eventually recover, they will slow production. Many leases have a drilling requirement as well. Companies will continue to drill the minimum number of wells to keep the lease.
