If rain has stopped play before BEGINNING, then if in the opinion of the umpires there is time for BOTH sides to face a MINIMUM 20 overs each plus the interval between innings a match is possible. If rain INTERRUPTS play during the first team's innings, if in the opinion of the umpires that they cannot resume their innings after the rain has stopped for the team batting second to face the same amount of overs, the second team takes the field to face a shortened innings if it is MORE than 20 overs. If not, the game is abandoned. If the team batting FIRST completes their 50 overs, then rain intervenes and the team batting second HAVE NOT taken the field, the game is shortened to NOT LESS than 20 overs. But this is the clincher: if the team batting SECOND, no matter how many overs the team batting first has faced, has their innings interrupted DURING their dig, then they must face a MINIMUM of 15 (fifteen) overs for a result. The fifth and last ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee series between Australia and New Zealand was rained on from the beginning. Australia faced only 22 overs. New Zealand were set a revised target in 20 overs. At the completion of the 14th over New Zealand were on track to make the target. The game was abandoned, which is why Ponting was smiling and Vettori looking glum. Just 6 more balls! Even if the 15th over was a maiden, the Duckworth-Lewis system would have awarded the game to New Zealand and they would have won the series 3-2. So, technically the MINIMUM amount of overs in a 50 over cricket match is 35 -- 20 for the team batting first, 15 for the reply.} |
