The above approach is working fine for me. One of the seniors here never apply anything to the plants and he always plant them in ground(even if it is a clay soil) by modifying a bit with added 'In ground soil'. He says that clay soil got abundant nutrients and we do not need to add anything additional. We need to loosen it a bit in the beginning of the years and they will plants will slowly accustom to grow in those conditions. The Soil also gets loosen over the years..
