He used to drive Nissan Murano earlier and moved to Mazda. Alternatively look at SantaFe or usual suspects like Rav4, CRV and Forester. I used SantaFe for 6 years before trading it in for Highlander 18 months ago. never had an issue and new ones have many better features but not sure if they have better safety features than Toyota now.
