If you view him the way ATL appears to, getting off his $46.5M and getting a semi-real 1st is huge. If your view is a little sunnier, ATL probably didn't get enough for saving OKC a gazillion. The two sides haggled over protections on that pick, sources say. OKC pushed for top-20 protected, but ATL got friendlier protections (lottery protected) in the end -- likely by rerouting Muscala to a third team instead of OKC. My initial take was surprise ATL got a 1st-round pick for Dennis that actually has a chance of being a 1st (though hard to know how good/bad OKC will be by then). But OKC saved a crazy amount of $, and would have had about $10M of Melo on the books if they stretched. OK for both |
