HYDERABAD, NOV. 7. Nampally Baba (72), also known as `Digambara Swamy', died in his Vivekanandanagar ashram at Kukatpally last night. He was 72. The `baba' was rushed to a nearby hospital at 10.30 p.m. as he developed some complications. He was declared `brought dead' by doctors. His body will be kept at the ashram till Wednesday to enable his devotees to pay their last respects.

It may be recalled that there was some controversy when the Endowments Department officials shifted the `baba' from the house of a devotee, Sravan, in Gowlipura, to his ashram on August 23, 2003.

Some devotees, led by Ajay Babu and Krishna, had accused Sravan of confining the `baba' in his house and collecting money. However, the latter contested the claim.

The two groups argued with each other at the ashram on Sunday with one vowing to cremate the body at Gowlipura and the other insisting that the godman be laid to rest at an open land adjacent to the Malakpet railway station.

Sravan charged Ajay Babu and Krishna with neglecting the `baba' after bringing another godman, Gopal Baba, from Visakhapatnam. The latter, however, denied the allegation. A couple of policemen were deployed to ensure that the argument did not turn violent.
