He was first pitched into the limelight as a 16-year-old when he hit a stunning unbeaten 177 for the India against England in Under-19 one-day series in August 2002. There are many instances of players getting big scores in age group cricket but it was made all the more special by the fact that India had fallen to 135 for six before Rayudu, who was opening the innings, decided that he wanted to win the match. England were beaten by one man.

A few months after that in November, Rayudu scored 210 off 232 balls with four sixes and 26 fours for Hyderabad against Andhra Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy. He wasn’t done though — he followed it up with an unbeaten 161-ball 159 which included 17 boundaries and five sixes in the second innings.

Remember, he was just 16. There were comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar and there were some who even considered them valid. Such was his promise.
