IMO - Go for Nikon if you shoot portraits/events/fashion

-Go for Canon if you shoot Landscape/Nature

The body looses value quickly.....my suggestion is invest in good lenses

if u just want to shoot with one lense 18-200 mm would be good for small events like birthdays etc

If you want good crisp quality PRIME is the way to go..50MM or 85MM (based on budget choose 1/8 or 1/4 etc)..you have to use your feet for zoom

Top of the line with good zoom and quality 24-70 mm f 2.8 and 70-200 mm with f 2.8 ( you get the Bokeh effect)

Get a external flash also
