Sarabjit Singh's statement in FIR No. 91 of Ghaziabad police station, Lahore, produced in special court on October 3, 1991

Q: Did you illegally cross the border on Aug 30, 1990? A: No, I crossed the border in connection with smuggling of liquor on the intervening night of August 29-30, 1990

Q: Is it a fact that on July 28, 1990, at 12.45pm you went to the railway station and placed a bag in a bus near GTS Adda, Lahore? A: No

Q: Is it a fact that when the bus reached Nizamabad Chowk, an explosion took place and as a result one child was killed? A: I don't know... at that time I was in India

Q: Is it a fact that on August 30, 1990 you were arrested at Kasur border and besides some other articles one Pakistani national ID card was recovered from you? A: I was arrested between the night of August 29 and 30, 1990. No ID card was recovered from me. At that time I was in possession of $800 and two Peter Scot bottles

Q: Is it a fact that on September 8, 1990 you made a confessional statement before Khalid Zauq, MIC, Lahore, Cantt, in which you admitted to have carried out five bomb blasts, including Ghaziaband bomb blast of July 29, 1990 A: I was neither produced before any magistrate nor did I make any confessional statement. I also didn't sign the documents. The signatures referred to are not mine. My name is Sarabjit Singh

Q: Is it a fact that on February 27, 1991 while in police custody you led the police and pointed out the place where you prepared the bomb in the railway station, Lahore? A: It is a concocted story

Q: Why has this case against you been filed? A: One Manjit Singh was arrested in this connection on August 31, 1990, but he was let off by the ministry and in his place I was arrested

Q: Do you want to say anything else? A: I am innocent

Q: Do you want to appear as defence witness in this case under Section 340CrPc and give evidence on oath in disproof of the charges or allegations made against you? A: No

The Charges | Accused of working for Indian intelligence, was viewed as a terrorist in Pakistan. He was convicted of spying and carrying out bomb blasts and was given death penalty; Pakistan, however, never presented the evidence to India

In the Court | Trial court gave him death on Oct 3, 1991. Lahore HC confirmed the sentence on December 10, 2001. Pak SC dismissed appeal in August 2005. His review petition was dismissed on June 24, 2009, because of non-appearance of Sarabjit's counsel

Mistaken identity

FIR in blast case didn't have name of Sarabjit Singh, son of Sulakhan Singh but mentioned Manjit Singh, son of Mehanga Singh When Sarabjit was produced before the magistrate on September 8, 1990, proceedings were held in the name of Manjit Singh In FIR, Sarabjit said he had no ID papers on him when he was arrested.

Who is Manjit Singh?

Manjit Singh Rattu was in Karachi at the time of the blasts and reportedly went to England soon after. With alleged al-Qaida links, travelled to Pakistan several times. Also known as Mohammad Sharif Rattu alias Mumtaz Sharif alias Amolak Singh. Deserted wife before leaving for Pak
