YSRC honorary president Vijayamma has only bared the partys growing sense of discomfort and desperation over the protracted incarceration of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, with her statement that YSR Cong would support the UPA post-2014 elections.

The Congress too appears to have responded in a subtle way. Analysts say its decision against fielding the sixth candidate in MLC polls, thus helping the YSRC candidate win one seat, cannot be independent developments. The Congress, which was keen on fielding the sixth candidate and throw a spanner in the works of the YSRC, dropped the idea at the eleventh hour.

The Telugu Desam and the TRS were quick to pounce on YSR Congress on the offer of support to UPA. If the party wants to support the Congress, why should Sharmila be on a padayatra and target the Congress day and night? Why this high octane drama? ask the leaders of the two parties.

According to sources, Vijayammas olive branch is an indication of the plummeting confidence that Jagan Mohan Reddy would be out of jail soon. In the absence of their leader, it is becoming increasingly difficult for party leaders to keep it going, which is essential at a time when elections are just a year away and local body polls before that.

This apart, another reason why Vijayamma appeared very defensive while making the offer of post-poll support is the changed political scenario in the state after the Congress has won the cooperative elections hands down.

This has obliterated the impression that it is TRS in Telangana and YSR Congress in Seemandhra. Now, it appears to be Congress versus TDP across the state. This could be one reason why the YSR Congress wants to make amends with the Congress, a senior Congress leader said.

Though Vijayamma says there were feelers from the Congress seeking merger of the YSR Congress with it, Congress leaders point out that there was no one in the Congress waiting to welcome the YSR Congress. Congress Rajaya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao said in Delhi: No one has sent any feelers to Vijayamma. In fact, she is the one who is trying to send the feelers. But the Congress would not bother about them because it does not want to encourage those accused of corruption, he said.

Political analysts say Vijayamma was speaking about post-poll support to the Congress as any announcement of a pre-poll alliance would become suicidal for the party. Even a hint to this effect would erode the vote bank of the YSR Congress, leaving Jagan Mohan Reddy with little strength to bargain with the Congress. However, post-poll is something that the Congress is not very keen on because of the uncertainty of winning the elections. But that is the best the YSR Congress could offer.

The immediate objective of the YSR Congress is to get Jagan Mohan Reddy out of jail. If they can do this with the offer of post-poll alliance, their immediate goal is achieved. Then they may even go for pre-poll alliance, but it would not do much good to ether Congress or YSR congress, one Congress leader said.

Meanwhile, senior YSRC leader MV Mysoora Reddy has dismissed the perception that Vijayamma had waved an olive branch. There is no need for us to curry favour with Congress because it would cease to exist after 2014 elections. Already, Mamata Benerjee is out of the UPA and Sharad Pawar too appears very uncomfortable. If any formation comes to power at the Centre after 2014, it would be either NDA or the third front. As we are against NDA, Vijayamma said she would support the third front and in the same breadth, the Congress. Nothing more should be read into it.
