New Delhi: An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit the Bay of Bengal region on Wednesday night, officials from the Indian earthquake monitoring network said. The epicentre was 30 km below sea level, they added.

The quake struck at 9:50 pm and the aftershocks lasted for 40 seconds.

Tremors were felt across India, in Delhi-NCR, Chennai, Kolkata and Odisha.

There is no tsunami alert, officials said.
