It is based on the life of lawyer and human rights activist, Shahid Azmi, who was assassinated in 2010 in Mumbai.[2][3] The film had its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival's ‘City to City’ programme in September 2012.[4][5][6] The film was selected for distribution by UTV Motion Pictures and is set to release on October 18th, 2013.[7] Hansal Mehta decided to make the film after he heard people were accusing Shahid Azmi of criminal activities: "He was not alive to tell his side of the story when aspersions were being cast on him. I decided to stand up for him."[8] Mehta approached Sunil Bohra who agreed to ask Anurag Kashyap to produce the film.[9] The film was shot on a small budget over nine months. Much of the film's dialogue was improvised.[9] One scene where Shahid Azmi is attacked was based on a similar incident that happened to Mehta when he was assaulted by the Shiv Sena as a result of his film Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!.[8]  |
