The world's largest atom smasher conducted its first experiments at conditions nearing those after the Big Bang, breaking its own record for high-energy collisions with proton beams crashing into each other Tuesday at three times more force than ever before.
The globe of the European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN, is illuminated outside Geneva, Switzerland in the early morning on Tuesday. The world's largest atom smasher was ready to start a new era of science on Tuesday, but initial problems delayed the scientists in colliding the first beams of protons to learn more about the makeup of the universe and its smallest particles.
