Movie Review: Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya
Gowtham Menon has chosen a solid script with nitty-gritty elements of love, humour and emotions at pragmatic approach. His casting of actors is perfect, their delineations are good. Simbhu and Trisha as the lead pair, make a hot-n-classy match.
Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya had many reasons for raising viewers’ expectations. The first and foremost reason was Gowtham Menon, the often ennobled maverick filmmaker of contemporary cinema, the comeback of A.R. Rahman to Kollywood after his triumphs at Oscar and Grammy and finally the hot-n-classy match between Simbhu and Trisha. But then, the film’s result is a big letdown as the screenplay lacks substantiality, and is brimming with absurd elements.
Story: Karthik (Silambarasan), an engineering graduate, wants to make it big as a filmmaker. He lives along with his family as a tenant. He falls in love with his house owner’s daughter Jessie (Trisha), a well-groomed girl raised in an orthodox Malayalam Christian family. When Karthik proposes his love for Jessie, she doesn’t accept it at first. But she is gradually left confused over making choices between the best and is caught between extreme confusions.
Now, it’s up to Karthik to ensure that things are right and join hands with Jessie. But it’s not as simple, as the climax leaves a lump in your throats. Direction: Gowtham Menon has chosen a solid script with nitty-gritty elements of love, humour and emotions at pragmatic approach. But he has seemingly made the screenplay very complicated in the second half. His casting of actors is perfect, their delineations are good, but very long second half drags on. The way he has roped in Nagarjuna’s son Naga Chaitanya and newcomer Samantha to do cameo roles (they perform lead roles in Telugu version) is laudable.
Acting: Silambarasan with a mature performance strikes gold by wooing his female fans while Trisha steals the show with her gorgeous looks in sari. But she looks quite older than Simbhu on the screen. The duo has done a great job by doing justice to their roles. The interactions between Simbhu and Trisha at KFC and their heart-touching breakdown of emotions in the penultimate sequences are fantabulous. But Simbhu looks slightly unnatural with his articulations over dialogues and so does Trisha, as Gowtham tries implementing Manirathnam’s style of low-decibel vocalism. The person taking on the role of a cinematographer is awesome and he keeps tickling your funny bones, His natural dialogues and style of presenting them is fine.
Technical department: A.R. Rahman’s songs are awesome. Especially, the title song ‘Hosanna’ invigorates our spirits while the picturing of ‘Omana Penne’ should have been done differently by avoiding the hip-hop kind of dancers accompanying the lead actors. Manoj’s camera speaks a lot, touching the psychological aspects of characters. Anthony’s editing is brilliant and he has come a long way from in his previous films. Art direction and locations are perfect with its eye-catching elements.
Drawbacks: The complex characterization of Trisha may irritate the audiences to a great extent. But that’s the reality and it has to be accepted. But on different notes, Gowtham attempting to offer climax at three different points does turns us restless and the ending is unconvincing again.
Final Take: The film has no chances of making it big in B and C centres, unless Gowtham trims down more portions in the second half. This is a differently the best film for Simbhu and Trisha as they have eclipsed their not-so appreciable work in their previous films.
Verdict: Could have been better
Rating: 3.5/5.
