For most part of watching the movie, I had a tear in my eye and a smile in my face. Yes, my name is Khan is awesome. But more importantly, it comes across as a very honest effort to tell a simple story which deals with a complex subject. It’s a heartfelt cinema with its flaws but with its heart at the very right place. A Karan Johar movie could never be so different, A Shah Rukh Khan fan could not be shocked more, My name is Khan is an honest and simple movie coming unexpectedly from the erstwhile makers of the most contrived tearjerkers.
MNIK is all about SRK the “actor”. He carries the movie single handed in every single frame. He plays a very difficult character and balances his act perfectly. Neither overplaying majorly, nor underplaying one bit. MNIK brings out the actor out of SRK much like Dil Se and Swades did and his performance in this movie may lie at the very top of all his efforts so far, Swades included. What makes MNIK the movie it is is SRK’s heart felt portrayal of Rizwan Khan. He has touched a chord with every one in this role with his disarming endearing. His introduction scene with Kajol where he says “I’m very very smart…” is probably one of the best scenes he’s ever done. The biggest take away for a cinephile from this movie could be this one scene.
80% of the first half of the movie, replete with SRK’s endearing performance is just so good, that I never wanted the 9/11 chapter to arrive. Post interval, the Paulo Coelho type story point of Rizwan Khan traveling the breadth of USA and a very forrest gump feel makes the movie really take off. The song that fits in during SRK’s journey is also so understated and uplifting. It’s almost surreal, that sequence.
Kajol has also done a fab job. He’s acted so well that you don’t even notice her acting. She’s just so natural you won’t realize how well she must have acted to pull that off. Well, seeing this kind of a movie, one realizes how much Kajol is missed.
The SRK-Kajol chemistry in the movie is so good that you could ignore anything else. But at a story level, script level and screen play level also, the movie is quite good. It has a few flaws, like the Obama SRK scene could have been done a lot better, Hum Honge Kamyab at that point was one time too many, the flood relief thing felt a little unreal.
For once, there was no unnecessary music, background score and lavish and unwanted sets. Karan Johar has done a complete U-turn and his fanbase will undergo a total shift. Before I saw the movie if anyone told me Karan Johar could have pulled off this movie, I wouldn’t believe that single bit.
About a year back, Anurag Kashyap had said that change has gone mainstream. My Name Is Khan is ample proof. Karan Johar the film maker has redeemed himself. Films like this, opens up a new future for Bollywood where we can realistically expect Bollywood Block busters to be outstanding too. And as far as SRK is concerned, he may get the national award this year.
