On top of that 4 teams will be qualified for knockout exactly no semifinals though a semifinal match is involved in that....
Top1 vs Top2 is Semis the winner will be thru to FINAL ....
Top3 vs Top4 is a quarterfinal, the winner will be thru to semis and needs to contest against the looser in the previous match. In this way TOP -2 teams are getting one extra chance.
so 3rd match in Knockout is looser among top2 teams vs winner of top3 & 4 teams)
Then FInal ...
In this format there is no need of 3rd place match ....
so total = 20 + 20 + 30 + 3 + 1= 74 |

Indian Premier League an outfit of BCCI will have 74 matches in the upcoming season 4. The decision on number of matches to be played in IPL was decided after governing council of IPL met in Mumbai.
The 10 teams of IPL will now be divided into 2 groups of 5 teams each. This way each team will play the other in their own group on a home and away basis, this will take the total number of matches in the first stage to 40.
In the second round of the tournament, each ipl team will play once against each other every team from the other group. This will add another 25 matches to the original 40.
After the both stages get completed, top four teams will qualify for the two semi finals to be played. There will be another match for third place in the IPL to qualify for the Champions League Twenty20.
A Grand Final will be played between winner of Semi Finals. This way total 74 matches will be played instead of 94 matches planned earlier.
IPL Governing Council also revealed that any four players can be retained by the Franchise owners before the Auction of players is held.
