A passenger airplane has crashed at the international airport in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, killing all the 105 people traveling on the plane.

The crash took place at 6:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) Wednesday when the plane was trying to land, AFP quoted security officials at the airport as saying on condition of anonymity.

"The 94 passengers and eleven crew members on board died," the source said.

The plane had been due to go on to London's Heathrow airport after stopping in Tripoli, BBC reported.

The aircraft, an Airbus 330, belonged to the Tripoli-based Afriqiyah Airways and arrived in from Johannesburg, South Africa.

A South African spokeswoman told Reuters that the plane had left Johannesburg on Tuesday night and was en route to Libya.

"We know that there is a plane missing and we are continuing to monitor the situation...We have no idea what has happened to it," she added
