HYDERABAD: Don't know if the Hyderabadi biryani you have ordered is authentic or not? Well, the much relished dish is likely to get a Geographical Indication (GI) status soon that will have a logo or hologram to assure foodies that it's the original Hyderabadi biryani laid out on the plate.
Nearly 200 hotels in the city which sell Hyderabadi biryani are part of an association of hoteliers which is seeking the GI status for the culinary delight that Hyderabad is so famous for. The hoteliers have applied for the tag at the Geographical Indications registry office in Chennai.
The AP State Biodiversity Board, which facilitated the process, hopes that the procedure to make necessary verifications by the office will be completed soon.
"There is a certain way the typical Hyderabadi biryani is prepared to get the right taste with the necessary ingredients. When the GI status is given to it, nobody can claim to sell Hyderabadi biryani anywhere in the country, unless and until it conforms to the standard set by an association of hoteliers," AP Biodiversity Board chairman R Hampaiah told TOI on Tuesday. What matters in the making of the biryani apart from the rice and meat is also the quantity and quality of spices that are used to give it the right taste, he said.
The assistance of AP Technology Development and Promotion Centre (APTDC)'s assistance was also taken while applying for the GI status for Hyderabadi biryani.
The famed Hyderabadi Haleem as well as Tirupati laddo have already got GI status.
A team of officials from the Geographical Indications registry office in Chennai is expected to arrive in Hyderabad in the next few weeks to begin the process of verification.
Tourists and visitors to the city make it a point to relish the delicacy that is available in most hotels in the twin cities. However, even in the twin cities, many hotels do not conform to the original recipe of the biryani with a lot of them passing off mutton fry or chicken fry fixed in fried rice as biryani. Though this can be called a variety, this will not pass the muster to be called Hyderabadi biryani.
Though the price of a plate of mutton biryani has gone up to Rs 160 - Rs 180 in some of the popular joints in the city, the craze for it has not diminished. In fact, some hotels have of late come up with the idea of what they are calling a 'single' plate of biryani selling a smaller quantity for Rs 80 a plate.
