He is not the star of multiplex cinema, his audiences are from the mofussil centres and they are a loyal lot. They waited for him to deliver a hit for six long years and when he did with Simha they went delirious. He is Balayya Babu for them and Balakrishna for rest of the world. Soon after Simha, Balakrishna signed Parama Veera Chakra and it tanked miserably but the actor ignores the outcome, says it was his long cherished dream to work with Dasari Narayana Rao.
He has seen success and failures in his career, this couldn't be new but makes it clear that apart from box-office collections, satisfaction for an artiste is of paramount interest. The script was interesting, treatment different but the outcome belied expectations. Just because a few films don't work, directors go through a rough patch, they don't become a spent force and he refuses to term Dasari as being out of form.
What more, he get's involved in Bapu's Sri Rama Rajyam, a mythological project immediately. This is his most adoring quality, there hasn't been a soul who has seen or heard him bad mouth a co-star or person in the industry. Disarming people with his smile and spreading camaraderie, positive vibes Balakrishna is forever talking and breathing cinema.
The actor talks straight, is not indecisive, he respects time and never forgets a face or an appointment. "I'm very transparent. Nacchakapothe kunda baddhalakottinnatu cheptha..if I like a person, I won't cross the limits but I will be friendly with him. I avoid psycophants, hypocrites like plague," says the actor who balances his time between films, family, friends and most importantly the cancer hospital which he heads as the Chairman.
The Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital is a no profit no gain institute being run in the memory of his mother, an extra two blocks is being constructed. Balakrishna was at a university campus recently and while addressing the students came up with a dialogue extempore from Narthanasala that wowed one and all. Difference in opinions on caste, community is rampant amongst students in districts, he reeled out his favorite dialogue from Okka Mogadu that goads a man to decry caste and be humane. He adds, "I also told them not to forget our language."
The actor is for the first time doing a full length role as Lord Rama and is very enthused about it. Sri Rama Rajyam is a social drama in a mythological format, Balakrishna insisted Bapu to include a couple of padyalu in the story which is imperative to give it a complete look.
What makes this story on Rama different from the previous films based on the epic? "We have shown Rama in a different dimension, as a human being how he missed Sita, the angst of separation et al," he avers. Nayanthara is an apt choice for being Sita and Balakrishna says he would have shelved the film if she were to reject the offer, casting matters a lot.
On his part the actor is going through re-runs of Lava Kusa to get a feel during his leisure. Balakrishna intends to do Narthanasala some day but only if he finds a perfect replacement for Soundarya. He has signed Manoj's movie too, it isn't a guest role he stresses.
Will he work with Jr. NTR sometime in the future? He astounds you with his straight talk. "I will do it if the subject is good. I've seen my father's multi-starrers Ramakrishnulu, Vayyari Bhamalu Vagalamari Bharthalu, etc., etc., which are total trash. I don't want to do such subjects."
He laments that the word 'hit' has lost it's true meaning. If a film has a four week advance booking is it a hit, what about the 5th week..he questions. Only a film with good collection accompanied by a positive talk is a success. Does his daughter, son-in-law watch his films, how do they react? It's plain speaking again. "They say it is good but add the word 'but', I don't know what that but means."
Balakrishna will take up a serious role in politics, in the next election and the clarity in his words, confidence in his eyes is visible.
