Marriage is give and take. You'd better give it to her or she'll take it anyway.!!!

MUI (Men's Underwear Index)

What undies say about the economy

WASHINGTON - One quick way to know when the recession will end is to look into the American man's underwear drawer.

If men are putting off buying new pairs and sticking to wearing threadbare underpants, the downturn is probably not over. But if there are new pairs in the drawer, that could signal better days ahead, reported The Washington Post.

Men's underwear sales might be an unusual economic indicator but according to researchers and analysts, sales numbers in the United States have been mirroring larger trends in the economy.

Even former Federal Reserve chief and economist Alan Greenspan touted the quirky fiscal indicator in an interview a few years ago. He reasoned that because men's underwear is hardly seen, it is one of the first things men skimp on when the economy gets tight.

The theory behind the men's underwear index or MUI is this: Sales of men's underwear are stable as it is a necessity for men. However, during tough economic times, men postpone buying new underwear. As such, sales of underwear will drop.

"It's a prolonged purchase," said Mr Marshal Cohen, senior analyst with consumer research firm NPD Group. "It's like trying to drive your car an extra 10,000 miles."

On the other hand, women's underwear sales are a less reliable fiscal indicator, according to market research company IBISWorld's senior analyst Raghu Rajakumar. "Historically, women cut spending on discretionary apparel less than men during economic downturns," he was quoted as saying by Australia's The Age newspaper.

According to US research firms, growth in the sales of men's underwear began to slow last year after the recession set in.

Research firm Mintel predicts men's underwear sales this year to fall by 2.3 per cent, the first drop since they started collecting data in 2003. Mintel also expects men's underwear sales to dip by 0.5 per cent next year.

By applying the MUI theory, the slowing of the decline may mean that the recession will soon be over.

Similarly, American retailers are seeing positive signs in their men's underwear department. Both department store chain Sears and supermarket chain Target are reporting stronger sales, according to The Post.
