The USCIS is using social networking sites to verify information submitted in petitions and applications. Don't let your on-line information trip you up.
A very easy way to check someone’s background, whether it is marital status or employment, is through social networking sites such as LinkedIn, MySpace and Facebook. The USCIS has figured this out as well and has begun using them to informally verify information submitted to them. While the information on these sites cannot be used as a formal basis for a decision, it does give the adjudicator a good indication as to whether the applicant/beneficiary is actually presenting the USCIS with honest information.
For example, a person who is applying for a green card through their US Citizen spouse who has not updated their “Status” on Facebook, may run into a problem if the adjudicator saw that they were “single” on their Facebook page. Another example would be a person who inflated their LinkedIn resume by using the different dates of employment, may run into an issue because this information does not match up with their work authorization. Of course this can be avoided by not having this information available to the public, but we have come to find that some of these sites are necessary for networking purposes. We suggest that users of these social networks be aware of this and set the privacy settings so that they block the general public from viewing their personal pages. They must also monitor any tags or mentions of their name as other’s in their social network might not have their privacy settings turned up.
