If I had a problem with ubuntu when I am novice, I did re-installation when ever something happened........it only takes 20-25 min ba to reininsall....but for solaris its a 2.5gb dvd baa.....it takes around 1hr to 1 and half hour to install.....But I didnt find it worth installing after seeing Ubuntu and Mandriva

artham aindi mama. proper driver and hardware support ledu ane kada. yeah, very few people try this sun solaris on non-sun hardware and most of the time no drivers developed by these hardware manufacturers due to cost issues and lack sun's help for driver base unlike MS which provides partner program to include drivers in its base OS. |

i worked on solaris platform since solaris 5 from 2001 to 2005 for a product development. at that time it is even worst.. u need to have a sun mouse, sun keyboard and sun monitor. we had a 1990 monitor sold by sun in our Data center and we used to connect that monitor for one of the multi CPU sun sever which costs few 100 thousands bucks. the reason for sun failure is they could not market and sell hardware at competing prices of compaq/hp and IBM AIX. |

worst anekanna.. solaris operating system is totally corporate avadam valla no company or engineer will discuss tech and support issues in public forums. mostly these days companies putting so many restrictions on dealing confidential data. so it goes to sun and they charge freaking money.. still thats how controlled source works.
why people hated MS in its initial years of inception was: the licensing costs for MS products is twice the resouces and systems cost. So the small and medium businesses hated them. Now due to competition MS prices are bit moderate.. but during monopoly days.. its a hell. |

solaris whole sale gaa madichi ettukoovacchu gaa.......I tried to install solaris before trying ubuntu, asalu eth card ee detect avvaleedhu........ubuntu ki atleast manual gaa wireless set cheyyalsi vacchinaa, eth card detect vauthundhi.......solaris iithe assalu detect kaaledhu......also naa pen drive akkada pani cheyyaledhu to manually transfer files.....

Get a Pirated XP with service pack 2 and re-install or install Linux flavour ubuntu , there are some GUI's which give you windows feel.
Before re-installing salvage all your important data , using a Knoopix CD

Good thing you can Run it from a CD with out necessity to install it in HDD , but still can be installed with dualBoot LILO or GRUB

Yeah naadhi 1gb ram Dell inspiron computer mama, I dont have any issues if I run dual boot option. It should be Okay for you tooo. Also regarding harddisk you can give 25-30gb of space initially and after that if you want you can add more mama. Right now I have a total h/d space of 80gb which I partitioned 40 win, 25 Unbuntu, 15 Free space

My laptop is Thinkpad X61. Right now 1GB RAM tho nettukostunna.. 2GB RAM okati koni upgrade chesukontuanu.

For Novice beginners I would suggest the Dual boot option mama, in that way you will atleast try to learn something new, coz if you run in windows you dont care that much

Mama go to www.ubuntu.com and d/l ubuntu 8.10 desktopp edition mama....or if you have a good laptop i.e with >2gb ram you can install ubuntu with in your windows xp using virtual box environment mama.....
Virtualbox is a s/w by sun which lets you install any OS environment in your windows/Linux environment. It just like another window in your Win/Lin environment.
But Ubuntu is rocks mama, in the sense that there is an option in Ubuntu which installs itself as a separate OS with dual boot option and also uses the resources of windows like wireless drivers and sound cards mama except that if you lapi is xps which has some issues with drivers.
I am dual booting xp and unbuntu on my laptop mama. I have not many issues with ubuntu, also the ubuntu community is very big and the response for your problem when you post in a community/forum is great mama.

Ubuntu 8.10 LTS server edition should be okay mama...Even I started learning Web development using PHP and MySQL by installing XAMPP server on my Dell laptop which runs Ubuntu Desktop edition.
XAMPP is an operating System free server environment which Includes
X- Linux or Windows (OS independent)
A- Apache2
M- MySQL
P- PHP
P- Pearl/PHPMyADMIN
My work server runs on Fedora Linux Machine mama. If you want me to I can provide you the instructions I followed to Install XAMPP on my laptop.
