by the way Gold didn't go up 30% in real terms. what we have seen so far is the result of USD weakness. in other words, Gold is almost flat (this year) in all other free currencies world wide i.e., Euro, Cdn, Aud, Swiss Francs, Sweedish Krona, British Pound and so on. when gold hits highs in all major free currencies in the world then we can think of a top. Until then the trend is up mostly. But this is a very high volatile sector. 30% to 40% correction is easy even in a strong bull market. not for weak stomachs. |

today gold dropped 3.5% GLD ETF
if dollar went up gold prices will fall, otherwise gold will raise.
Also alternative energy sources are also good investments even though they are pricy right now.. PBW ETF, FSLR, ESLR are pretty expensive right now
Consumar staples XLP is good in these market conditions.
Also MOO is good  . it dropped 8% today.

next few years are going to be tough. volatility will be much higher in any market. better look for companies with less debt and more global presence in any field with diversified currency exposure. if you have at least 5 years investment horizon then the following fields may be interesting:
1) Any thing to do with food prodcution i.e., seeds, fertilizers, equipment for agri field etc.. Companies in this area are BG, POT, MON, MOS etc. They are not cheap at this point but there is a good chance these would go lot higher in the next 5 years. Buy them on dips like today.
2) Energy - Oil & gas companies with future production increases and proven & producing fields in secure countries. That will eliminate lot of companies as most of them suffering with declines in production and could not replace them with new fields. Canadian companies are much better than exxons, chevrons etc. Integrated companies are not bad i.e., COP, VLO etc. Some of the oil & gas explorarion companies with secure reserves are Encana, Petro-Canada, Suncor, Imperial Oil etc. All these companies trade on NYSE too.
3) Gold - will go lot higher than it is today in next few years simply because of inflation. In my opinion we are going to see tremendous inflation (real) pressures driven by food and energy prices. Buying direct metal is better option in my opinion. GLD (ETF) is an option too. I am not sure about silver at this point as some one told me that the demand is less now as no one is using regular film, every one is in to digital photography. I believe in the past silver's biggest demand is film processing.
4) Base Metals - Lots of demand for various base metals from China, Russia and India. Look for diversified businesses in this sector i.e., BHP Billiton etc.
5) Big Pharma - Right now lot of companies are really beaten so much you can find lot of opportunities like Pfizer Inc., if you are willing to wait for 5 years at least.
Lastly don't buy any banks/financials at this point. There is lot of risk still in this sector. |
