I added CSCO on Friday. I bought this for first time a year ago. even though it has gone up 25% in the past year, I just broke even due to the Canadian dollar appreciation in the same time frame. 10% drop in two days is over reaction from the market on a blue chip, hence I added to my position. My investment horizon is long, minimum 5 years. The only other tech (?) stock I currently own is EBAY.

yeah.. I think its a silly reason to beat down the stock. if market sentiment improves it'll definitely bounce back. other wise :-(

Appl, RIMM, GOOG are holding their value until the last two days. But they are also begining to fall which is pretty bad sign. Looks like its better not to invest at this time.

Beer mama,

YHOO will bounce back for sure. I was shocked when I saw it at 26 today. I immediately jumped in. I hope its not a bad move. What do you feel?

BERKELEY, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- One of the weird ironies we are witnessing is the reaction to Yahoo Inc. turning over information about a user in China to government authorities. The man subsequently was arrested for subversion, in essence.
For this, the online giant is being raked over the coals by a few legislators, to the point where the stock is being adversely affected. See related story.
During this piling on Yahoo (YHOO:

No fuss is being made over this on Capitol Hill, and in fact various lawsuits against AT&T (T:

It's been determined that no email is protected by any privacy laws, so all the public's email can be turned over to the U.S. authorities. No fuss is being made over this on Capitol Hill.
So let me try and get a grip on this. From what I can tell, our Congress is doing more to protect the rights of Chinese citizens than to protect the rights of its own people.
Am I missing something here? Did I miss a memo? A meeting?
The fuss over Yahoo is being made by a San Francisco Bay Area Democrat, Tom Lantos. Yahoo is a multibillion-dollar Silicon Valley company. How much in political donations did Yahoo make to Lantos? My guess is very little, if anything.
We're seeing more high-tech firms ripped by politicos flexing their power. Generally companies with no political savvy are being targeted.
But exactly why Yahoo is even agreeing to being debased like this is beyond me. It's pointless, and now it is hurting the stock.
The company should have been in "no comment" mode from the moment the Chinese matter came to light. The message should have been, "We are sorry for what happened. We are reevaluating our procedures."
That should have been it, done. No more statements.
Yahoo is doing business in China; it is subject to that government's laws there. The United States has been demanding similar kinds of information about its citizens all along from companies like Yahoo. How is this any different?
The difference is that someone was arrested, and the incident became a cause celebre. A dissident getting arrested in China is nothing new, but Yahoo's involvement was the part that made it interesting.
That said, Yahoo could have handled things a lot differently when the Chinese asked for information.
It could have played hide-and-seek with the data or played dumb. It could have provided faulty information "by mistake." It could have stalled.
The argument often cited here is that Google Inc. (GOOG:

GOOG 666.56, -27.28, -3.9%) would not have done what Yahoo did. This is true for the time being, but can all change. In the end, it is users' responsibility to protect their anonymity if they want it protected.
There are plenty of reasons why Yahoo shares should fall -- reasons such as poor performance. The China flap should not be one of the them.
I cannot get worked up about Yahoo selling out the Chinese dissident. I think it was bad, but it's not about Yahoo when all is said and done. The company was a pawn.
More to the point, I'm more concerned about American citizens than Chinese citizens. Apparently, Congress is not.
