What's it about?

Ramakrishna or Rakhi aspires to become railway stationmaster like his father (Chandramohan). His love interest and close friend Tripura (Illeana) is a reporter in TV channel who exposes atrocities against women in society. For Rakhi, his sister Gayathri (Manjusha) is everything. She is married off to software professional (Ravi Varma) who plans to go USA.

The greedy in-laws burn her alive for more dowry. Devastated by this he takes up law on to his hands and kills everyone who harasses a woman. A police officer (Suhasini) convinces him to surrender to the law. The court drama is the rest of the story.

Analysis

For the first time hero NTR and director Krishnavamsi have teamed up for this film. Both of them are going through rough patch. So in a way Rakhi is a very crucial film to their career. Did they succeed? Well, Rakhi musters the pass to some extent. It is not a bang-on film nor is it a bad one. An average typical masala drama laced with high-voltage performance by NTR, touching hearts with emotions here and there and good music.

Brother taking up law on to his hands when his sister is killed for dowry is nothing new. But director Krishnavamsy has expanded the theme to larger scale by making hero fighting against the atrocities against women in the society. He takes up the same formulae route that we have seen in umpteen films like Tagore and Bharateeyudu. But Rakhi doesn't boast the emotional quotient like them. That's why all the scenes in the film look pretty theatrical and artificial.

Nevertheless, it scores on three points – NTR's matured performance, Devisri Prasad's music, and second half.

You need to put your thinking mind aside to enjoy the proceedings. There are too many loopholes in the story.

Performances

Undoubtedly, it has excellent performance by NTR. In emotional scenes and in court drama, he scores in big way. Despite his odd looks, he makes it up with matured performance. As far as looks are concerned, he has never looked so obese and bad. No wonder that heroine Illeana calls him 'bondam' and 'fatty'. My God, what has happened to his hair?

Thankfully, Illeana looks charming and sexy as ever. She also gives decent performance. Manjusha who played the sister role is not given meaty character. The film's main drive is not just sister sentiment, hence the director has focused on other aspects giving improper treatment to this character.

Manjusha is okay. For the first time, Kota appears in Krishnvamsi's film and the experienced actor has done neat job. So has Chandramohan. Normally in Krishnavamsi's film's Prakash Raj is given hyperactive role. For a change, this time the mantle is entrusted to Suhasini who expectedly goes overboard. Prakash Raj (his character is so absurd) appears as justice in the end. Oh, yeah Charmi is there too – only to irritate the audiences and interrupt the proceedings. She is one of the cardboard characters in the film. She has also dubbed her voice.

Devi Sri Prasad's music is excellent. His songs are foot tapping and his re-recording has elevated the film. Of the songs, Jara Jara is shot beautifully. True mark of Krishnavamsi! Rakhi Rakhi, and the title song are best among the songs. Cinematography by veteran cameraman S Gopal Reddy is just okay.

What's hot!

Hero's acting style, some emotional scenes, and the second half are plus points. Also Illeana's glamour and songs are advantage.

What's not!

Logic less plot, typical masala fights and age-old revenge drama puts off. Also it is too preachy. The first 45 minutes of the film look like a TV serial. There is no entertainment (the comedy track of Brahamanadam is stale). Too many loopholes in the film and scenes defy logic. Like in all Krishnavamsi's films, you confuse the relationships between the actors. They all hang at one house (no establishment of the characters) and act hyperactively. Charmi's character is unnecessary.

Bottom-line

It has commercial elements that might work at box-office. Rakhi is more of a typical time tested masala movie that might work in B and C centers. Don't expect rousing entertainment. It's just plain movie that ends up an average flick. It's range of 'success' depends on other releases on this season. All in all, NTR might get the much needed hit with this film.
