I am not sure, but i think Cognos has capability to interact with SAP. Actually Cognos itself has variuos modules maama...liek Powerplay,Transfoermer,Impromptu etc
Cognos corporation originally launched all these as different products,sold all of them as a package called COGNOS
later they came up with a better one called Reportnet...
and now it merged both Cognos and report net and came up with something called Cognos version 8,i think...

so basically this ETL is done with the help of tools like
--> Informatica,Datastage etc: They are ETL tools which have the capability to retrieve data from any database(Oracle,SQL server,Teradata,notepad,access,excel etc etc) and load it into any database.
--> Cognos,Reportnet,BusinessObjects,Discoverer etc are the OLAP tools through which we can build cubes and design reports for managers.

DWH concept endante....when ever we want to retrieve some data,may be for reporting purposes or data analysis purpose, rather than querying the whole database, we query a newly created small database staged with summary data(called a DWH) taken from the big database.
so,reporting/analysis becomes easy for managers bcos we have only the important data in this small database(DWH)
DWH life cycle entante: 3 imp steps mama
1. ETL ( Extraction,Trasfoermation,Loading)
first deciding what is the important data we need,perform aggregations or transformations on these data and load it into another staged database which our DWH
2. OLAP (Online Analytical Procesing)
Once we have a DWH staged, we try to view the data in more than two dimensions (not like we have rows and columns in a simple excel sheet but like a data cube)
EX: A cube of Product,Region and Sales.
so we can cut this cube how ever we want (called as slicing and dicing) ,drill data to the maximum possible extent for analysis.
3. Reporting
design reports with datacubes.
