Vijayawada boy ranks 2nd in IIT

Vijayawada, June 16: When 25 per cent of students who qualified for the country’s premier engineering institute belong to one State, it does call for attention. Students of Andhra Pradesh have this year excelled in the IIT (mains) exam. About a thousand students from the State did well in the prestigious test and garnered 25 per cent of the 4,200 seats available in seven IITs and two other institutes.

P. Arun, a student of the Vijayawada Nalanda IIT-JEE Academy, came on top bagging the all-India second rank. An history of sorts. But he was not the only one who gave the State a reason to be proud of. Vamshi Anand, who was rejected by two corporate colleges because of his physical impairment joined the Narayana Group and bagged the all-India 17th rank in the exam. “I am happy that I have achieved this,” said Vamshi whose legs were left useless at the age of six following a heart surgery.

Elsewhere, defeating all odds, Koneti Srinivasulu, son of a poor weaver from Nellore secured the 34th rank. He has come this far, but has no idea what the future held for him. “My father earns about Rs 1,000 per month,” said Srinivasulu. “He will not be able to pay my IIT fee,” he said. The poor student, who was coached free of cost by the Narayana Group, is now pinning his hopes on gaining a scholarship.

In academics, as in tennis, it pays to keep time with an ace player. Pydimarri Arun of Vijaywada, who got the national second rank in IIT-JEE (mains), was trying to keep pace with his brother who won the 60th rank and got into IIT Mumbai.

Arun has now surpassed his brother and has also done his State proud by creating a record of sorts. Arun has a long list of academic achievements. He got the 14th rank in the State in Eamcet-2005 and 27th rank in the all-India level in the AIEEE. He scored 95 per cent in Intermediate public examination where the topper, Pavan Kumar scored 98.4 per cent. Arun’s achievements do not end here. This serious reader has also been selected for the International Science Olympiad at Taiwan.
