Akshaya Tritiya, the third day of the bright half of Vaishakh, is considered one of the most sacred days to start anything auspicious. Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej is the birthday of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. It is also regarded as the start of the Treta Yuga.
Astrologically on the Akshaya Tritiya day both the Sun and the Moon are in their signs of exaltation and it is very auspicious.
According to the Vedic texts, on this day and with these astrological combinations the ancient Rishis performed the first yagya in the history of mankind and it marked the start of a time regarded as the Golden Age of Indian culture.

Akshaya means that which never ends. All over India people celebrate weddings, plan new business ventures, long journeys and other events on this day and buy gold, silver and other assets.

Performing Vishnu Pooja and reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra are considered highly auspicious on this day for prosperity and progress.

IT is well known that Indians believe passionately in the theory of muhurts or auspicious times to perform sacraments, to make major purchases or to begin new ventures. Inspite of modern technology and changing lifeviews, this dedication to auspicious time is a prominent feature of Indian life. Akshaya Tritiya, the third day of the bright half of Vaishakh, is considered one of the four most sacred days of the vear.

The word Akshaya means that which never diminishes - hence beginnings made or valuables bought on this day are considered certain to bring luck and success. All over India people celebrate weddings, plan new business ventures, long journeys and other events on this day. Like Diwali, Dussera and Gudi Padva. Akshava Tritiva is reserved for buying gold, silver and other assets. On this day jewellers keep their shops open well into twilight time to entertain their buyers. Akshaya Tritiya or Akha TeeJ is traditionally the birthday of Parshurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. The Puranas tell how he reclaimed land from the sea along the west coast of India by his valour. Even today Goa and the Konkan are called Parshurama Kshetra. He then settled 96 selected families there, called Shahanavkuli Brahmins, who are said to have created the cultural heritage of this nart of India. In India gold is regarded as the ultimate symbol of wealth and prosperity. Buying gold and jewellery is a popular activity on Akshaya Tritiya, one of the most auspicious days of the year.

Akshaya Trutiya

This festival is celebrated on the third day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Vaishakha. This important festival is held in every farming household. It is characterised by the ceremonial sowing of paddy in the field. Oblation is offered to the goddess of destiny, 'Shathi'. AKSHAYA TRUTIYA

Celebrated In : Throughout Orissa

Celebrated On : The Third day of the Hindu Year (April)

Also Known as : Muthi chhuan in Western Orissa

Significance : Chandan Yatra starts from this day.

Main Ritual
Akshyaya Trutiya is exclusively an agricultural festival held on the third day of the Hindu year. On this day the farmer ceremonially starts sowing seeds in the field, especially paddy. Early in the morning, farmers in their respective homes arrange the materials for the ritual. After taking ablution in a river or tank they wear new clothes and carry the seeds in new baskets.

In the field offerings are made to Lakshmi, the 'Goddess of wealth', which the farmers do it themselves. Then they sow seeds ceremonially praying the Goddess for a rich bumper crop. In the evening feasts (strictly vegetarian) are arranged in respective homes.

In western Orissa, this festival is called 'Muthi Chhuan'. Eating of green-leaves ('Shag') is forbidden for the day. It is observed by all farmers irrespective of their caste and creed.

Beginning Of Chandan Yatra
The famous Chandan Yatra of Lord Jagannath, which is observed in various other shrines of Orissa starts from this day. Moreover, from this auspicious day the carpenters start building the cars ('Ratha') of Lord Jagannath, Balabadra and Subhadra.

On this day women also worship 'Sasthi Debi' popularly called 'Sathi Duchhei'. The Goddess is said to be the guardian of children. She has also the power to bestow the women with children. Therefore, she is propitiated with great devotion.

Legend
Religious scriptures testify that Ganga, the sacred river of India landed on the Earth on this day from Heaven. She is the perennial source of water, which is the need for agriculture. Therefore, this auspicious day was chosen to start sowing seeds.
