the problem with laxman is he is not a player who can rotate strike. in test matches it is ok even if u defend 5 balls and get a boundary of the 6th one but not in one dayers. he is neither a good fielder nor a good runner between the wickets.

There's another reason why Laxman shines. This period has been a relative low for the Indian batting. Prior to the Kochi match, the seven batsmen had together scored only seven centuries in 31 matches.

Laxman alone scored four of those, three of them securing a win. Yet, that is not enough for him to get a berth in the team

Sachin's contribution against quality opposition in match winning knocks is distinctly sub-par, while Ganguly shows up in a better light. Laxman, however, again is the unambiguous leader with an average of over 70, Dravid is next with 62 and Sehwag is the only other batsman to average over 50 in victory.

His detractors point out that his fielding is a weak point. There is also a perception that he takes too long to score his runs.

But his strike rate in this period, of about 80, is better than any batsman, barring Sehwag and Yuvraj.

He has scored six centuries and 10 half-centuries in 80 ODIs ever since making his debut against Zimbabwe in 1997. Is anyone listening?

Laxman has the highest average in the 2004 season out of India's six premier ODI batsmen - Sehwag, Sachin, Ganguly, Dravid, Yuvraj and Kaif.

Dravid, is marginally ahead of Sachin. Sehwag and Yuvraj barely cross the 30-run mark, while Ganguly and Kaif languish in the 20s

Who has been India's most valuable one-day batsman in recent times. Sehwag, Sachin or Ganguly? None of these.

The man who has the most impressive record since the beginning of 2004 is not even in the squad today- VVS Laxman.
