[TIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

While India has been obsessing about Sachin Tendulkar’s elusive 35th Test hundred, Virendra Sehwag has been rewriting the record books in his own swashbuckling style.

At the current stage of his career (56 innings) he has achieved more in terms of runs, average and centuries than any of the obvious Indian yardsticks — Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin, Rahul Dravid or Mohammad Azharuddin. But Veeru’s exploits are not just exceptional by Indian standards. His record is also head and shoulders above most contemporary batting greats, Brian Lara being the only clear exception.

For starters, Sehwag has got to 3,000 Test runs in far fewer innings than any Indian batsman. He got to the mark in his 55th innings, the first innings of the Bangalore Test, whereas the next fastest, Azhar, took 64 to get there and Gavaskar took 66.

Considering that both Gavaskar and Azhar had dream debut series, that’s no mean achievement in itself. Further, barring Lara, who got to 3000 in 52 innings, no other contemporary batsman from any country has got there faster than the explosive Indian opener. Mathew Hayden (61) and Adam Gilchrist (63) are the closest.

Sehwag in his 56 innings so far already has 10 centuries, including a double and a triple. Neither Indian greats like Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Dravid and Azhar nor current international stars like Hayden, Gilchrist, Lara, Ponting, Inzamam, Vaughan, Graeme Smith had managed as many at the same stage of their careers.

In terms of the aggregate runs scored at this stage, Sehwag is beaten only by Lara who in his first 56 innings had 145 runs more than him. Among the Indians we are looking at, nobody had crossed even 2,700. Similarly, barring South African captain Graeme Smith, none of the other international players being used for this comparison had more than 2,700 in their first 56 innings.

Not surprisingly, Sehwag’s average at this stage (55.96) is higher than any of the others at a similar stage of their careers except Lara and Gilchrist. Of course, the Indian opener’s average is an extremely strange mix of a stupendous first innings average of 75.09 (next only to Bradman among those with 2000 or more Test runs) and a lowly 25 for the second innings. It’s no surprise, therefore, that every one of his 10 centuries has come in the first innings.

Considering that Sehwag has totted up these impressive figures while maintaining a strike rate of almost 73, next only to Gilchrist among those for whom data is available, surely it is time we started looking at the man from Najafgarh as something more than just a mindless dasher.
