(Telugu:-) (b. June 10, 1960), popularly known as Balakrishna, is an Indian actor in the Telugu film industry, and the son of the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, NT Rama Rao. His fans call him Balayya or NBK.

Balakrishna was born in Madras (now known as Chennai), Tamil Nadu, to Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao and Basava Tarakam garu. Balakrishna has seven brothers Swargiya Rama Krishna, Jaya Krishna, Hari Krishna, Mohana Krishna, Swargiya Sai Krishna, Rama Krishna, Jaya Shankar Krishna, and four sisters Dr. Lokeswari, Smt Purndhareswari,Bhuvaneswari and Uma Maheswari. He is married to Vasundhara Devi and has one son Tarakarama Mokshagna Teja and two daughters Brahmini and Tejaswini.

Career in Films

[edit] Early Days

Referred by fans as Yuva rathna in Telugu,Balakrishna was always his father's true heir from the childhood. He have very good relation with notorius move producer Mr.Bellam Konda Suresh. He debuted as child artist at the young age of 14 through his home production Tatamma Kala that featured NT Rama Rao and Bhanumati in lead roles. His first foray into films thus gave him an excellent opportunity to work with and learn from two legendary personalities of Tollwyood.Though his passion towards movies was driving him strongly, his father's insistence on completing graduation kept him away from taking complete plunge into movies. He was acting on and off for nearly ten years mostly in movies made under home production. His performances as 'Abhimanyu' in Dana veera sura Karna (A classic block buster that portrays his father in triple role) and Annadammula Anubandham won him much deserved critical acclaim. While 'Abhimanyu' role in Danaveera sura Karna proudly showcased his acting capabilities at a very young age,it also sent feelers to NTR fans about his upcoming big bang arrival and kept them on tenterhooks.Upon watching Balayya's performance in Annadammula Anubandham(a run away hit and remake of Dharmendra's Yadoon ki baarat),Akkineni Nageswara rao (ANR) another pillar and legend of Tollywood declared

'Simham kadupuna Simham puttindi'.

[edit] Solo Hero

Though his entry into filmdom was a cake walk, his hardwork, determination and discipline made Balayya stand out among his contemporaries in the Industry.1984 was a eventful year for Balakrishna as it marked the release of his first film as solo hero Sahasame Jeevitam.Directed by Bharati and Vasu, the movie failed to live up to the expectations.Within three months after its release,Balakrishna was already an established star with huge fan following. It was Mangamma gari Manavadu of Bhargav Arts that gave him the much needed break and recognition.Directed by Kodi Ramakrishna and produced by S.Gopal reddy the movie created mass hysteria and went on to break many records. It was also the first Silver and Golden Jubilee movie for Balakrishna. His performance as innocent, stubborn and brave villager won him rave reviews and people could identify themselves with that role. The movie had a record 532 day run at Tarakarama theater in Hyderabad(With morning shows). That was the starting point and this combination of S.Gopal reddy,Balayya and Kodi ramakrishna thrived further to produce most memorable hits of Tollywood.Kathanayakudu produced by Suresh Productions and Sri Madvirat Potuluri Virabramhendra Swamy Charitra, his home production also celebrated 100 day run and made the year memorable for him.

Balayya acted with ANR for the first time in Bharya Bhartala Bhandam in 1985.He also worked with Hasya Bramha Jandhyala for Babai abbai(Remake of Late NTR's Vaddante Dabbu) that showcases his comedy timing.

[edit] Mass Hero

In 1986 Balayya delivered double hatrick. All his six movies Muddula Krishnayya, Seetharama Kalyanam, Anasuyamma Gaari Alludu, Desoddarakudu, Kaliyuga Krishnudu and Apoorva Sahodarulu(dual role for the first time) turned out to be commercial hits and celebrated 100 days run.The Same year saw Balayya appear on the Cover page of prestigious 'The Week' magazine under the title HEIR APPARENT.Hits like President garabbai,Ramu,Muvvagopaludu,Bhanumati gari mogudu in 1987,Inspector pratap and Raktabhishekam in 1988 further bastioned his position. It was during this time Balayya became famous for his roles in Village backdrop.Balayya panche kadite Boxoffice panta pandinatte was the belief of common moviegoers.Stunned by the response of the crowds to his son, when Balayya was canvassing for Telugu Desam Party in the mandal and ZP elections in 1987,Swargiya NTR declared Balayya as true heir to him.

Hits and superhits were coming, but fans were not completely satisfied. They wanted some thing more..a movie that could shook, shatter and create wonders at Boxoffice. And their thirst was quenched by Muddula Mavayya.Release of Muddula Mavayya in 1989 created mass frenzy among fans and moviegoers.Coming from the powerful stable of Bhargav arts, the movie broke all the existing records and celebrated 100 day run for the time in 28 centers in its first release.Balayya's dance numbers and histrionics were catchy with mass and became highly popular.Balayya was also bestowed with titles Gold star,Boxoffice Bonanza and King of Kings by fans and film associations during this time.Bhaledonga a runaway hit was also released in the same year.

[edit] All Rounder

It's a undeniable fact that among his contemporaries,Balayya is only best suitable hero for playing folkrole, mythological and historical roles. He proved that with his unique acting prowess in movieslike Narinari Naduma Murari(a full length lighter vein comedy role),Lorry driver(Mass role),Bramharshi Viswamitra(As mythological Harischandra and Dushyanta) and Aditya 369 (Historical SriKrishnadevaraya).Aditya 369 was the first science-fiction movie on Indian screen and his portrayal of SriKrishnadevaraya role brought him laurels from everywhere.Lorry driver was the beginning of superhit combination of Balayya and B.Gopal.Released in the same combination in 1992,Rowdy Inspector created Boxoffice rage and set the cash counters ringing.

During the year 1993,two of his movies got released on same day with much fanfare in maximum number of theaters in Andhra Pradesh and both of them had 100 day run at Boxoffice(Nippuravva and Bangaru Bullodu). This is one of the unique feats that none of his peers would ever dare to do even today. In 1994 Bhairava Dweepam(his first folkrole venture) came like a hurricane and swept all the records by having sensational run at Boxoffice.Yester years records of Late NTR's Lavakusa were also broken by this movie. It was followed by another superhit movie Bobbili Simham.Apart from delevering mass hits like Vamsanikokkadu and Peddannayya,Balayya also acted as Lord Krishna and Arjuna in a full length movie for a first time in Sri Krishnarjuna Vijayam.

[edit] Trend Setter

When Balakrishna was at all time low, desperate to hit back hard, he joined hands with successful director B.Gopal to make a comeback. The film was shot almost in a low profile with Rayalaseema faction backdrop.Released for Sankranthi in 1999,Samarasimha Reddy emerged as millennium's biggest hit by creating history and carved a new page for itself in Tollywood. It became the first ever telugu movie to run for 100 days in 73 direct centers in its first releas by smashing each and every existing record and created all India record by running to 200 days in 20+ centers. The dialogues, blastings, ferocious action scenes, chasings, "Seema" oriented histrionics engrossed the audience to the core. The phenomenal success of this film opened new doors to the commercial films once again when love stories and youth oriented subjects were ruling the roost.Balayya was conferred Yugastar title in the same time.

The magic was bettered again by the same hero-director combination in 2001 by Narasimha Naidu(First movie to celebrate 100 days at 105 centers). It also won him prestigious Nandi Award(awarded by AP Government) for Best Actor. The success of these two movies gave fresh lease of life to all mass heroes and many movies followed up in the same lines.Balayya was also bestowed with Nata Simha award during this time. Lakshmi Narasimha is the last superhit from this sensational hero. He's currently working on Okka Magaadu and Ranga Panduranga.

Balakrishna's recent performances in TANA as SriKrishnadevaraya and Yamadharmaraju (July 2007) mesmerized everyone abroad. He was honoured with Viswa Vikyata Nata Teja title.

[edit] As A Person

As a person Balakrishna is disciplined, hardworking,God believing and down to earth in nature. He doesn't have starry airs, doesn't involve in others' work and treats everyone with due respect. He's very well versed in Hindu mythology, culture and has good command over Telugu language. He surprised everyone in TANA with a 45 minute speech in pure telugu without using single word from any other language. He's also kind at heart. He's the first hero to donate 3Lakhs to Tsunami Victims and artificial limb kits to patients in BIRRD hospital,Tirupati. He's actively participating in the activities of NTR Charitable Trust and has come forward to bear the expenses of heart operation for five children.
