Why Telugu movies are not coming to UK..... Distributor's Athmaghosha!
Movie distribution itself is a gamble and needs lots of luck….Distributing a Telugu movie in the UK has never been an easy task because of various reasons, got tougher & tougher and now it's completely dead.. We can clearly see this from present and past scenarios; there have been no permanent or consistent distributors in UK history due to heavy losses.
What are the reasons?
* problem with the UK Telugu Movie market
* theatres' rents are very high (750/220 capacity theatre rent is £1800/800 in London for one show)
· Internet piracy (movies are available on the internet within no time of release)
· distributors are paying a higher price than what it deserves
It's not the correct time to talk about all other reasons except the last one, we STRONGLY say that YES we have been paying exuberating rates for UK distribution for some time. This might be either because of new distributors entering without knowing the market potential or over hyped competition created by the worldwide distributors.
One of the disadvantages of the UK market is where we should purchase the BBFC (British Broadcast Film Council) certificate (costs you £1850 including freight charges) to screen the movie. It is one of the major obstacle to screen the movie on the release date/weekend (examples: Boss, Annavaram etc). We need to book the appointment with BBFC two weeks prior to the release and if there is any change (which is bound to happen) of plan we need pay them an extra £1250.
Why do we need to discuss this now???
Errabus was been asked by many cinema pichchollu that why were not there any telugu movies been screened in UK in recent past, in spite of hits like Dhee, AMAV and Sivaji
It is high time to know the reality of our Telugu movie market in UK. If we take the complete year (from 2006 Sankranti to now) into account there are only three movies (Pokiri, Bommarillu, Godavari) which made the bucks to distributors and the rest are loss ventures. Not to say, some of the super hit movies in India (like Vikramarkudu, Chatrapathi, Ramadasu and Desamuduru) have been failed completely to collect rewards in the UK. The distributors are buying the movie rights whilst dreaming of Pokiri / Bommarillu collections, instead of looking at the business potential. Eventually they are realizing the reality.
There are total 45,000 Telugu people living in the UK including students, but only 5% of people are watching the block busters like Pokiri. Please note that only London (85%) has the major market for Telugu movies and the rest of the share comes from other cities in the UK & Europe. Here are the last few movies screened in the UK with % of loss to the distributor;

Yogi 120%
Jagadam 85%
Sainikudu was the last movie screened in other cities along with London. The exhibitors have completely stopped buying the movies outside London because none of them were able to generate enough money to cover the theatre rent.
Finally we don't know who is correct in the following??
Producers: Think that they can get easy money from oversees market with a bit of manipulation (it was made easy for them because of new distributors' ignorance)
Worldwide distributors: are thinking that UK & Europe market is huge after US and can easily get 15% of total their investment
Audience: are thinking that why we do need pay £10 for an average movie to watch in worst theatres as they can easily watch it in two weeks time, at the most, on the Internet
UK distributor: Enough is enough; this is my first and last movie as a distributor
Please don't gamble with your hard earned money on distributing the Telugu movie in UK. If you really want to distribute the movie, please study the market first and then call the earlier distributors for advice.
What is the solution?
All the distributors should form an association such as TMDC (Telugu Movie Distributor Council – to know more about please drop a mail to TMDCinUK@errabus.com) and should register with BBFC under Asian minority act. Then we should discuss all our issues on regular basis and decide the correct rates for UK market based on various factors (Hero's market, genre of the movie etc). Also educating the new distributors and avoiding the unnecessary competition (created by worldwide distributors) among ourselves.
