Tuesday March 27, 05:02 PM Ram Gopal Varma and Mani Ratnam come together
Ram Gopal Varma is back. No we are not talking about his remake of Sholay. Check out what we spotted on a leading Mumbai tabloid today. ''Ram Gopal Varma and Mani Ratnam join together for the first time in Bollywood'' - that's what caught our attention and then the title of the film bedazzled us - 'Satya - The Sarkar'. Both the films Satya and Sarkar were directed by Ram Gopal Varma and the poster of this film uses the font of the original films to its effect.
So now we started wondering. Is it a sequel to Sarkar or Satya? Are these the real RGV and Mani Ratnam that the ad boasts about? Has April 1 come early this year?
Urmila Matondkar, Revathy, south star Jagpathi Babu and also Chiranjeevi in a special appearance with Rami Reddy and Kota Srinivas Rao (Selvar Mani in Sarkar) in a film which nobody knows about. How can this be? Have the movie Gods turned a blind eye towards some of the biggest names in the industry?
IndiaFM puts the question forward. What is Satya - The Sarkar?
We know curiosity killed the cat, but we were hell-bent on solving this mystery. So after some extensive research in not just finding the original film but also the truth behind its Bollywood counterpart, this is what we found out.
The film is originally a Telugu film called Gayam. True to the advertisement, the film was directed by Ram Gopal Varma and Mani Ratnam was one of the screenplay writers. According to some forums, people say that Sarkar had shades of Gayam which released way back in 1993. Gayam was a success and we would like to remind you that this film came a cool two years before Rangeela. So now we know where the RGV- Urmila connection was established.
A blurred black and white advertisement didn't seem to engrossing so we decided to attain something more. After a few failed calls to movie halls for the film poster proving futile, the distributor seemed to be the only option remaining. Dilsa Distributors at Lamington Road (one of the major hubs for film distributors) were very co-operative in lending us some of the film's promotional material.
On seeing the material, our first guess was that one of it was inspired from Satya's poster. But Satya released a five years after Gayam. So was Satya a case of plagiarized promotion? You figure that one out.
At the end of the day, if you found this feature interesting then do watch the film which hits screens this Friday in Mumbai.
