New Delhi: Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble has announced his retirement from One-Day cricket at a press conference in Bangalore on Friday.

Addressing the press conference, Kumble said that he wanted retire on a higher note but that could not happen. He hoped that his Test career would end on a happier note.

"It has been a one long journey that started in 1990. Today I formally announce my retirement from One-Day cricket," Kumble told the press conference.

"It's time to go and give chance to the younger lot. I will be available to play Test cricket for India. It's always nice to finish on a high note. Unfortunately, it does not seem to happen. There is not always a fairytale end. Hopefully it will happen when I leave Test cricket," Kumble said.

He added that he wanted to retire four years ago after the 2003 World Cup but delayed his decision, as he wanted to represent India in one more World Cup.

"I thought of giving up ODIs four years back. Actually right thorough out my career I was fortunate enough to be a part of the team. It became a habit to be a part of the team," he said.

He also said that he has been planning to write a book on his cricket career.

The veteran leggie was not a regular member of the Indian cricket team in the recent times and played his final ODI in the World Cup in the West Indies against a lowly ranked Bermuda where he took three wickets.

"I wanted to go with the ball in my hand. It did not happen in the last World Cup. It feels a bit different to be a part of the team and not play. I was hurt at not being a part of the eleven but took it in my stride," he said referring to the team management's decision to sideline him in favour of younger players.
