GDP: Gross Domestic Product. The total market value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a given year, equal to total consumer, investment and government spending, plus the value of exports, minus the value of imports.
If you take above definition and analyse for the US!!
1) Investment and Govt. spending is higher year over year. But govt. is spending a lot on defence iraq etc. More govt. spending leads to current account deficit when you don't have enough tax receipts to balance.
2) Value of imports is much higher than value of exports i.e., trade deficit.
3) Consumer spending is still holding due to the fact that real estate did well in the last 4 to 5 years. Lot of people used their homes as ATMs (refinance) and spent on things like big TVs, cars etc.. No value/real wealth is created due to this and people borrowed much more than their repayment capacity.
US used to be the country with highest individual savings rate 25/30 years ago. Now the savings rate is negative (for the past few years) i.e., overall people are spending more than what they are earning. US became a service oriented economy due to the job losses in mfg. sector (jobs moved to china, mexico etc.)
17% of the total residential mortgages in the US are sub-prime and banks are carrying very risky loans. There are 2.5 million unsold homes are on the market now.
Consumer is the last hope but I think he is going to buckle sooner than later.
I think we cannot avoid the recession in the US in near future and question is that how severe it is going to be? |

Both of you make sense. Like Fubar I too feel it may not be the same as it was in 2001-02. The Consumer spending is okay even now, the Housing BOOM which was unrealistic came to it's realistic sense, and overall the planning seems to be good after that 2001-02 bad phase. For example we are not seeing unrealistic salaries, unnecessary hiring even after economy picked up in 2005. Things are going on a cautious note.

Why is it so? Is this a RED FLAG as was in 2001?? After September 2001, the STOCKS were never to their respectible level again till 2004. Now again the STOCKS crashed and crashed very badly the world over!!
Yenna paristhithi?? STOCKS konaledu kada annay manaketi bada anoddu. If STOCKS don't pick up again, go on sliding than the overall enonomy will be in doldrums, thus pulling us towards recession.
