Alonso wins the San Marino Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso held on to take his third consecutive race win this afternoon at San Marino in what was an action-packed Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher bounced back from his error in qualifying to cross the line just a fraction of a second behind the Championship leader. It was one of the most thrilling races in a long time as Alonso crossed the line to take the San Marino Grand Prix win with Michael Schumacher right in his wheel tracks.

"That was one of the best, if not the best, fighting finish to any race in my life," said Alonso. "I knew Michael was at least one second a lap faster than me in the closing laps and I had to keep him behind me. My only chance to do that was to hold him up mid-way into the corners and then pull away. I never thought of giving up and letting him through so I could settle for second place. Never."

The story of the race was not Kimi Raikkonen who led the race with ease early on before mechanical problems robbed the unfortunate Finn of a possible victory, but Michael Schumacher. Starting in 13th position it looked to be a dismal race for the 2004 race winner. Unperturbed, Schumacher shadowed his brother Ralf Schumacher in 11th position until the first round of pits stops.

This was the critical moment in the race for Schumacher as he stayed out on track, put in a string of blistering lap times and once he exited the pits following his first stop, he ran third behind race leader Alonso and Jenson Button in the BAR Honda.

Schumacher mercilessly closed the 20 second gap to Button, making a decisive and clean move to pass the BAR Honda racer as he got distracted by the battling Williams driver ahead of him that he was trying to lap The final round of stops saw Schumacher emerge just behind Alonso and try as he might, he could not find a way around the Renault driver to take his first win of the season.

For Alonso, it was a well-deserved win on a day when it was clear the Renault did not have the pace to match either McLaren or Ferrari.

"I don't know if I should be happy or disappointed," said Schumacher. "Of course, I am glad for the team that we have shown we have a fast car and we have, at last, taken some points and finished second. This only shows that if I had not had my problems in qualifying this morning, well, who knows what we might have done?

While Alonso and Schumacher put on a great show for the fans, Jenson Button is celebrating his first race finish of the season and a podium at that. The BAR Honda racer did not have the pace to challenge for the win however and the third position was a good result for all concerned after such a torrid start to the season.

Alex Wurz gained ground in the pitstops like Michael Schumacher and drove a solid clean race to finish in fourth position in his McLaren Mercedes. The team will however leave San Marino pretty depressed as Raikkonen had the race under control at the front until it went wrong on lap nine.

Takuma Sato proved what a tremendous race driver he is by battling his way through a tough race to finish in fifth position in his BAR Honda making it a very happy day in the BAR Honda camp while Jacques Villeneuve made best of a very good getaway at the start of the race and some good consistent running to bring his Sauber Petronas home in a very impressive sixth position.

Jarno Trulli ran third early on in the race, but it was a bit of a false dawn for the Toyota racer as he did not have the pace to start with the leaders. The Italian driver slipped back down the order to finish in seventh position just ahead of team-mate Ralf Schumacher who scored the final Championship point.

Over at BMW Williams the raced proved a bit of a disaster. Mark Webber made a sluggish start to the race from fourth position on the grid losing out to Jarno Trulli and then later in the race slid further back battling with Sato. To make matters worse for Webber team-mate Nick Heidfeld beat him across the line to take ninth position. Webber lost a lot of time late in the race, but regardless of that, it was another poor performance under race conditions.

A sublime drive from Michael Schumacher

Vitantonio Liuzzi finished his first Grand Prix in 11th position for Red Bull Cosworth. The Italian drove a good Grand Prix showing the way to the experienced David Coulthard who spent much of his race battling with Felipe Massa. The Sauber driver got the better of Coulthard in the end with some very robust driving into the first turn.

Jordan achieved another double race finish with Narain Karthikeyan proving quicker than Tiago Monteiro once again while neither Minardi of Patrick Friesacher nor Christijan Albers finished the race.

Rubens Barrichello retired early on in the race while running just out of the points while Giancarlo Fisichella had a dreadful time of it as he crashed his Renault out of the event early on after some kind of breakage or failure at the back of the car.

While Alonso will go down in the history book as the race winner, the memory of the San Marino Grand Prix will always be the amazing drive put in by Michael Schumacher who picks up eight valuable points for his second position. The Formula One circus reconvenes at Alonso home circuit of Barcelona in two weeks. The message is clear for the championship leader, the wins are getting harder.
