Thanks for the info. Last time I visited Germany in 98. I was there before in 96, spent 3 months in training in a place called Ratingen (10 mins. from Dusseldorf). Later in 98 I spent another 3 months for a project work in Oberhausen (close to Essen). I travelled a lot in those 6 months and visited almost every big tourist attraction in Germany and around. In North America we do not find any big cultural difference from one end to the other. In Europe, you can find different cultures in such a small area. It's a great area to visit. I am not sure about living there for ever, i.e., in Germany. I am sure now the situation is much different but in 96-98 it was hard to find a person (on street) who can speak English.
You are correct, there is nothing much to see in Duisburg except a small zoo.

If you are staying couple days in Dusseldorf, don't miss Cologne. It's a wonderful city. It's not that far from Dusseldorf and if you are staying over week-end, you can buy week-end ticket and you can use it in trains (not high speed), trams and buses. That ticket is valid from Friday mid night till 2.00 AM on Monday. It used to be 35 DM in 1998 but I am not sure about the price now. Actually five people can travel on that single week-end ticket. In case you are going alone it is still cheaper than buying individual tickets if you are willing to travel a lot. Dusseldorf itself is a great city and it has longest pub street (about 400 pubs in one street) in the world. Germany is a great country to visit and don't miss it. Good luck. Have fun. |

if you have your tickets booked, they will give it to you easily. You can rent car with American license and its not expensive if you book in advance, I have no idea abt the distance.
